Frequently Asked Questions

What can I encode in a QR code?

QR codes can encode URLs, plain text, email addresses (mailto:), phone numbers (tel:), SMS messages, WiFi credentials (WIFI:), vCard contact information, and more. The maximum data capacity is about 4,296 alphanumeric characters or 7,089 numeric characters. Our tool supports up to 2,000 characters for optimal scanning reliability.

Can I scan QR codes without an app?

Yes! Modern smartphones have built-in QR code scanning. On iPhone, simply open the Camera app and point it at the QR code. On Android, open the Camera app or use Google Lens. No third-party app is needed for most devices running iOS 11+ or Android 8+.

Do colored QR codes scan properly?

Yes, as long as there is sufficient contrast between the QR code and the background. Dark colors on light backgrounds work best. Avoid light colors on white backgrounds or similar low-contrast combinations. Our default black on white provides maximum scanning reliability. For best results, keep the contrast ratio above 4:1.

Can QR codes expire or stop working?

Static QR codes (like the ones generated here) never expire. However, if a QR code points to a URL, that URL must remain active for the code to be useful. If the website goes offline or the link changes, the QR code will still scan but the destination will be unreachable. For dynamic URLs that can be updated, consider using a URL shortener service.

What size should my QR code be?

For digital use (websites, emails), 200x200 or 300x300 pixels is sufficient. For print materials like flyers and posters, use 400x400 or 500x500 pixels. A general rule is that the QR code should be at least 2cm x 2cm (0.8 inches) for reliable scanning. The scanning distance should be roughly 10x the size of the QR code.
